We’re delighted to share that Andrew Baker, Managing Director and co-founder of Soil Acoustics, has been named in The ENDS Report Power List celebrating 100 of the UK’s most influential environmental professionals.
Now recognised for the second consecutive year, Andrew’s listing reflects his long-standing commitment to science-led innovation and his impact on environmental policy, nature conservation and ecological consultancy. With over 30 years of experience in ecology and environmental law, Andrew has built a reputation for challenging conventional thinking and pushing the boundaries of how we monitor and understand our natural world.
His inclusion in the ENDS Report Power List 2025 shines a spotlight on his pioneering work in soil acoustics through the creation of the Soil Acoustic Meter (SAM), a world-first technology that records and analyses the soundscape of soil life. Developed through collaborative DEFRA-funded research with scientists from the University of Warwick and now being delivered to customer via Soil Acoustics Ltd, the SAM offers a non-invasive, data-driven method of measuring soil biodiversity and ecosystem function.
Supporters quoted in The ENDS Report describe the technology as having the potential to revolutionise how we monitor soil health. By “listening” to the life beneath our feet, the SAM gives farmers, land managers, rewilding projects, researchers and policymakers a powerful new tool to assess soil condition, support regenerative practices and inform more sustainable land-use decisions.
One supporter commented, “His ability to see the bigger picture is rare and sets a great example for the profession, especially in a political climate that often views nature as a barrier to development.”
Andrew’s broader vision connects soil health to climate resilience, carbon sequestration, regenerative agriculture and food security. His work with Soil Acoustics demonstrates how innovation at the intersection of science and technology can unlock new ways of protecting and restoring the natural systems we all depend on.
At Soil Acoustics, we’re proud to be driving this change forward through applying cutting-edge ecoacoustic research to real-world challenges and providing practical tools for better environmental stewardship.
Congratulations to Andrew on this well-deserved recognition. His leadership continues to inspire and shape the future of ecological innovation.
